RECRUITMENT & DEVELOPMENT
|
MENTORING SCHEME
For many students, University life is a new experience. It is both an exciting and daunting time. The STAGS believe that membership of a Sports Club or Society can help create a sense of 'belonging' for new students, giving them an opportunity to meet friends, develop new skills and to become part of the wider Student community.
The mentoring Scheme will assist in the recruitment, development and retention of STAGS players, officials and supporters. New recruits will be given a mentor, someone who will work with the new recruit, helping them take their first steps into Student life. Where possible, Mentors will be working on a similar course, sharing their experiences and passing on useful advice on academic and non-academic issues.
INTERNATIONAL / COLLEGE ALL-STAR TEAMS
The emergence of the STAGS as a major force in University American Football has coincided with the dramatic increase in selections to the Great Britain BULLDOGS and Southern Conference All-Stars WILDCATS teams. The STAGS encourage all members of the team to work hard to attain the skills required to represent their University at International level.
In 2004, eight players, three coaches and five Cheerleaders from the STAGS / Vixens (Cheerleaders) travelled to San Francisco, where they represented Southampton as part of the Great Britain BULLDOGS, the UK’s elite Football team. Whilst in the UK, 15 players and Four Coaches were selected to the Southern WILDCATS, the Conference All-Star Team representing the South of England. In 2006, Great Britain travel to Los Angeles, where we hope that several STAGS players make the team and a trip of lifetime.
In addition, Ben Webb and Dan McMillan of the STAGS travel to Germany, where they have signed semi-pro contracts. In 2006, we hope that other STAGS players gain the chance to join the semi-pro ranks through contacts in Germany, Austria and Denmark.
TEAM / INDIVIDUAL AWARDS
In 2004/5 STAGS player Ted Baynham was awarded BCAFL Player of the Year, and Ben Webb was named BCAFL Special Teams Player of the Year. From the STAGS, nine players gained University / Club Colours for Committee work and International Representation.
