Total Eclipse Of The Herts (B Tyler)
Total Eclipse Of The HertsThe Southern Conference Final saw the undefeated Southampton Stags host the undefeated Hertfordshire Hurricanes in what promised to be the best game in the South this season. Both teams had strong, free-scoring offences and both defences had been consistent throughout the season, although had gained little attention.

The Hurricanes received the ball first and after a couple of punts opened the scoring when a long drive, kept alive by the scrambling of #8 Fred Boyle in the Stags red-zone, resulted in #9 Issam Affoury blasting in from 2 yards out. The Hurricanes scored the extra point to lead 7-0.

The second quarter started brightly for the Stags as #33 Tam Amachree capped a long Stags drive with a rushing touchdown from a yard out, with #37 Ben Webb adding the extra point. The quarter continued much as the game had started both offences moving the ball reasonably well, with Amachree and Affoury being the main ball carriers, but the defence forced punts and turnovers. The Stags did find the endzone again with Amachree cutting back across the Hurricanes defence to score an impressive rushing touchdown, for the play to be called back for a block in the back by the Stags’ centre. Penalties against the O-Line cost the Stags heavily on drives as both sides were moving the ball consistently for short gains and any botched play or penalty soon forced a punt.

The Stags came out stronger in the second half and #1 Michal Katnik moved the ball quickly down the field, with key receptions from #37 Ben Webb and #11 Dominic Olney until Olney caught a pass just short of the goal-line, dodged a couple of would-be tacklers and walked into the endzone for a 16 yard score. The Hurricanes defence blocked the kick to keep the lead to 6. The Stags moved the ball back into Hurricanes territory and came close to scoring again but Webb has an uncharacteristic drop in the endzone and the offence soon turned the ball over on downs.

In the 4th quarter the Stags offence scored again to provide the team with some breathing room as Katnik took the ball in himself from a yard out after #22 Chevy Green had had a touchdown called back, the snap on the XP was bad and the score was 19-7 still. The Stags defence soon came to prominence in the game. They had played well all day, and all season, but as usual had been over-shadowed by the offence with the sacks and the tackled punter, by #92 Ed Butcher, in the second quarter but a distant memory. Hertfordshire were 1st and 10 on the Stags 13 yards line, but with deafening crowd noise forcing false starts and a delay of game penalty combined with immense pressure from the Stags front 7 claiming sack after sack the Hurricanes soon found themselves at 4th and 47 on their own 40 yard line with little option but to punt the ball away. The Stags offence then went almost the length of the field on the ground with Amachree and Green pounding the ball down the field until with 8 seconds to go and in the Hurricanes red-zone the Stags let the clock expire and went to shake hands with their opponents knowing that they would still be playing the next week.

The Stags offence kept the ball for long periods of time in the game as they aimed to keep the Hurricanes offence with Fred and Issam off the field as long as possible. The offence managed to grind out 82 plays altogether. #1 Michal Katnik did well on the ground and through the air, with great receiving help from #37 Webb and #11 Olney. #22 Green and #5 Passler did well when called upon to carry the ball and Green had an immense performance blocking. The O-Line did well but almost every individual on the line committed a penalty which was usually a lack of concentration. The MVP had to be #33 Tam Amachree carrying 35 times for 207 yards and 1 TD against a very solid Hurricanes defence.

The Stags defence performed exceptionally well as the Hurricanes offence was loaded up with talent. The defensive front had a huge game with #73 Sam Bennett and #92 Ed Butcher creating a lot of pressure from the DE position and rookie #93 Mark “Olaf” Brewer doing remarkably well at DT despite having very little game-experience before the conference final. The defensive backs helped the defensive line gain all their sacks by taking away Boyle’s receiving options, and despite criticism before the game gave up very little yardage through the air whilst providing run support. The linebackers benefited from the performances around them and were able to stop the run, create pressure and defend the pass very well against a strong opponent. The defence’s greatest achievement on the day had to be keeping the Hurricanes to 13 yards net offence in the second half. The individual award for MVP went to #73 Sam Bennett, who was a constant threat to the Hertfordshire passing and rushing attack and even managed to tackle Affoury one handed whilst under another Hertfordshire player.

The special teams played their part in the kicking and punting game as #4 AJ Woolley found the endzone with almost every kick-off and in the 3rd quarter hung up a high punt that was muffed by a Hurricanes player dropping back to attempt to return it that the Stags recovered. #92 Ed Butcher also tackled Hurricanes punter #80 Fabrizio Gargiulo in the second quarter to provide the Stags offence with excellent field position.

The Stags would like to thank all their awesome supporters for the noise they created on the day, which went along way to helped performance on the field. The Polish supporters provided entertainment on the banks between the field and bar with Greg Forys fire breathing dressed as a Stag and the rest of the crew waved banners and signs and added drumming to the atmosphere.

They faced a Staffordshire STALLIONS side led by the rushing attack of #34 Ed Goka, top in rushing yards and touchdowns league-wide.

Stags Give Greenwich A Mean Time
Stags Give Greenwich A Mean TimeThe Stags took their 8-0 regular season record & #1 ranking into the playoffs amid doubts that they were yet to be tested against alleged stronger opposition. There were many predictions of a #8 ranked Greenwich victory over the Stags.

Would the tough Greenwich defense prove too much for the record scoring Stags?

A Home Away From HomeThe weather for the game was forecasted to be appalling and from the pre-game warm-ups it appeared as though both sides were in for a long, cold wet day.
