|
[1]
STAGS
|
|
|
|
|
The STAGS and the HURRICANES are both currently 10-0. Both sides won their divisions. They are ranked #1 and #2 in the BUAFL Southern Conference. The only way to split these 2 sides is the best way, on the field, in the Southern Conference Final, this Sunday 16th March 2008 at Wide Lane, Southampton.
ROAD TO THE SOUTHERN CONFERENCE FINAL
REGULAR SEASON
STAGS
Played 8 | Won 8 | Points Scored 462 | Points Conceded 20
HURRICANES
Played 8 | Won 8 | Points Scored 340 | Points Conceded 58
POST SEASON
Southern Conference Quarter-Finals
STAGS vs Greenwich MARINERS 43-0
HURRICANES vs Reading KNIGHTS 51-7
Southern Conference Semi-Finals
STAGS vs Bath KILLER BEES 35-13
HURRICANES vs Birmingham LIONS 46-24
This is shaping up to be The Game Of The Season.
Last time the two sides met was in last season’s Southern Conference Quarter-Final, where the HURRICANES led at the half, the STAGS came back, the HURRICANES regained the lead late in the 4th, and in the final minute on 4th down the STAGS completed a 40+yard bomb to set up a 1-yard rush for the win. This year could be just as close, just as tense and just as heart-stopping.
The HURRICANES have emerged undefeated from another (arguably) most competitive division in the league, the South Eastern. Their regular season was mostly plain sailing, barring a couple of close results against the STAGS’ previous playoff opponents MARINERS, who pushed them to 22-11 & 16-8 games. Herts average score was a 49-11 at home (including 1 shutout). Away from home they averaged 36-3 and two shutouts.
STAGS vs HURRICANES has been a keenly contested and hard-hitting affair over the years since Herts joined the league in the 94/95 season. Every game is testament to two of the consistently strongest organisations in the league, with games played every year (since the turn of the century) despite being from different divisions, as both are high ranking teams and regular post-season challengers – 1 in 3 of all National Title College Bowls has been in either the STAGS or the HURRICANES Trophy Cabinet.
OVER THE YEARS...
The rivalry between the two teams started with two victories for the STAGS in the HURRICANES’ first two seasons: 26-0 and 36-0 on visits to Southampton. 96/97 saw a Southern Plate Competition defeat 0-12 by the HURRICANES.
The 97/98 season had the two teams meet in the Play-off Round 1. The eventual College Bowl (XII) Winners, Herts, took the spoils 21-0 on home soil. The STAGS were saved from playing the Three-peat HURRICANES (inc. College Bowls XIII & XIV), as the only fixture scheduled in 01/02, a trip to Herts, was postponed and unplayed, though awarded to the STAGS.
Season 02/03 is the only time the teams have met twice in a season. The first was a 33-31 shoot-out won by the STAGS in The (Old) Cage, Southampton, which was the HURRICANES only regular season defeat for the year. The return match was the Southern Conference Final, where the HURRICANES advanced 49-18, making the most of home-field advantage, but controversially missing out on their fourth College Bowl victory to the Stirling CLANSMEN.
An early regular season game in Hatfield ended 44-20 to Herts, on their way to the College Bowl XVIII victory. 04/05 saw a promising STAGS team capitulate 48-12 in the Conference Semi-Final at Herts. On their way to the 2006 National Championship (College Bowl XX) the STAGS had their 5th road trip (in five seasons) and battled amid the smog from the nearby explosion to take the spoils 22-13, which (to date) is the only time the away team has taken the victory.
HEAD-TO-HEAD...
The all-time head-to-head record (not including Plate Competition & unplayed fixtures) for the STAGS against the HURRICANES stands as:
P 10|W 6|L 4|T 0|W% 0.600|PS 204|PC 235|Avg 20-23
With an eye on Sundays game...
AT HOME the STAGS are undefeated in 5 fixtures with Herts:
P 5|W 5|L 0|T 0|W% 1.000|PS 132|PC 60|Avg 38-12
POST-SEASON the HURRICANES edge it:
P 4|W 1|L 3|W% 0.250|PS 55|PC 140|Avg 14-35
The one win was the only game on home soil.
Potential results based on this year’s form (average scores):
~ 54-44 in an Offensive shoot-out
~ 9-3 in a Defensive battle
~ 63-4 STAGS’ Home Form
(all in the STAGS favour)
~ 3-36 to the HURRICANES on their away form
Taking the average of all these scores has the STAGS taking it 32-22 [Well, it worked last week!|Ed]
No doubt this will be the STAGS toughest challenge so far. Could fatigue and injuries play a major part after a long season and the two tough games last week?
The victors will be on the road to Doncaster for the BUAFL National Championship Game I (“College Bowl XXII”) versus the Northern Conference Champions. It could be either the #1 Newcastle RAIDERS or the #2 Staffordshire STALLIONS neither of who will be looking forward to a match-up with teams with a combined 7 National Championships – the STAGS have never played either team but the HURRICANES who have never faced the RAIDERS hold the head-to-head with the STALLIONS 2-0 including a victory four years ago in College Bowl XVII.
One team will lose for the first time this season. It’s a long wait for next season for the loser but glory is but one more step for the winner. Will it be the STAGS 4th or the HURRICANES 6th Southern Conference Title...?
Find out for yourself by coming along and supporting the STAGS and HURRICANES at The (New) Cage
Wide Lane, Southampton SO50 5PE on Sunday 16th March, Kick Off at 2.00pm.

'Perfect' STAGS Back On Top
|
The undefeated Southampton STAGS faced the undefeated Staffordshire STALLIONS in the inaugural BUAFL Championship Game.
The STAGS had won the National Title 2 seasons previously in a year when they had set the points record and greatest final victory in college history, the 07/08 side had an offence just as potent and a defence that conceded only 4 touchdowns all season.
They faced a Staffordshire STALLIONS side led by the rushing attack of #34 Ed Goka, top in rushing yards and touchdowns league-wide.

Total Eclipse Of The Herts (B Tyler)
|
The Southern Conference Final saw the undefeated STAGS host the undefeated HURRICANES in what promised to be the best game in the South this season.
With free-scoring offences and consistently mean but understated defences, there was little to choose between them going into the game.
The winner will go on for a shot at the inaugral BUAFL National Championship Title, in the first BUAFL National Championship Game [College Bowl XXII in old money|Ed] taking on the Northern Conference Champions, Staffordshire STALLIONS.

Stags Give Greenwich A Mean Time
|
The Stags took their 8-0 regular season record & #1 ranking into the playoffs amid doubts that they were yet to be tested against alleged stronger opposition. There were many predictions of a #8 ranked Greenwich victory over the Stags.
Would the tough Greenwich defense prove too much for the record scoring Stags?

A Little Bit Of History
|
The Stags headed into their final game of the regular season knowing it held massive implications for the club. Not only were the Stags competing to go 8-0 for the first time since the early 90’s, they were also within striking distance of the season scoring record in British College Football...

A Home Away From Home
|
The weather for the game was forecasted to be appalling and from the pre-game warm-ups it appeared as though both sides were in for a long, cold wet day. Just before kick-off the skies began to clear and the wind dropped substantially allowing a decent football game to be played on the Tsunami’s very own 3G Field... 45-0 to the STAGS.

Water, Water Everywhere...
|
It was apparent from the opening kick-off that weather was going to play a huge part in this contest. Heavy rain mixed with cold winds made for tricky conditions for both offences.
The Stags... didn’t allow the weather to dampen their spirits... and took the tie... 21-0.
