KILLER BEES [4]
|
STAGS [1]
|
|
|
|
|
The Stags are undefeated this season going 9-0 and scoring a record 505 points whilst conceding only 20.
Bath finished top of the South-West division (7-0-1) scoring 182 and conceding 48 and are ranked #4 in the South. Last round they knocked out the #5 Royal Holloway Vikings 39-0.
Win and the Stags move on to the Southern Conference Final, lose and they're out.
It's all or nothing. (Again.)
With the Southern Conference Quarter-Finals all going with the rankings:
#1 STAGS solid performance (43-0) against the #8 Greenwich MARINERS
#2 Hertfordshire HURRICANES ousted the post-season debutants #7 Reading KNIGHTS 51-7
#3 Birmingham LIONS took a close one (14-6) versus the defending National Champs #6 UWE BULLETS
#4 Bath KILLER BEES cruised past the play-off rookies #5 Royal Holloway VIKINGS 39-0)
...all the winners are undefeated in BUAFL 07/08. So Southern Conference Semi-Final weekend will see two teams defeated for the first time this season. But not before some cracking Football has been played.
Bath have emerged from (arguably) the most competitive division in the league, the South Western with a zero in the L column. Their regular season has been a stop-start affair with the weather playing havoc with the schedule and resulting in the need for a double header match and an unplayed fixture. It also included victories home and away versus the defending National Champions BULLETS and post-season perennials Cardiff COBRAS.
In the regular season Bath averaged a 39-8 scoreline at home (including 2 shutouts in 3.5* games). Away from home in 2.5* games they averaged 18-8 and a shutout. (* the half games were part of the double-header and actually played at the same venue. Or something.)
The STAGS have a relatively long and closely competitive rivalry with the KILLER BEES up until the STAGS were taken out of the South Western Division. The last time the two teams met was a ding-dong (dooberry?) battle in which the STAGS returned home victorious 31-18 in the 2002/03 season.
The year Bath joined the league was during the STAGS second Championship Year (season 92/93) and they were visited with a 70-0 defeat. But by the following season an (almost) entirely new STAGS side came away from the West Country after a 18-6 defeat. 94/95 saw the KILLER BEES turn round a 12-6 home defeat to a 24-8 victory away. Similarly, the STAGS flipped a 32-6 away loss to a 2-0 home win the following year.
Continuing the trend the STAGS took the one match up in 96/97, 6-0 at home. 97/98 was possibly when the teams were most evenly matched with the home leg finishing 0-0 (OT) and the visit to Bath finishing 13-12 in the STAGS favour. 98/99 saw the STAGS take the regular season honours 30-15 at home but miss out 6-0 in the Southern Plate competition.
Lean times followed for the STAGS, with two away defeats (99/00 30-7 & 01/02 29-8) and yet another Tie game 6-6 (OT) in Southampton (00/01). Although, in 01/02 the return leg ended with a STAGS win 14-0.
Curiously in all these years the two teams have never met in the post-season (not including Plate Competitions).
In the regular season head-to-head the STAGS record stands as:
P 15|W 9|L 4|T 2|W% 0.667|PS 235|PC 174|Avg 16-12
With an eye on Sundays game - at home the STAGS are undefeated in 7 fixtures with Bath (W 5|L 0|T 2|W% 0.857|PS 82|PC 29|AS 12-4) but 5 years is a long time and both organisations have moved on a great deal (including a National Championship in 05/06 for the STAGS) and present a very different prospect.
Based on this year’s form (average scores) the game could finish:
~ 56-32 in an Offensive battle
~ 7-2 if the Defenses take control
~ 68-3 if the tie goes with STAGS home form
(all in the STAGS favour)
~ 8-19 to the KILLER BEES based on their away form
[~ 35-14 as the average of the above four scores|Ed:10Mar08]
But who knows what the pressure of the playoffs will do to either team and what results may occur?
Should the STAGS take the honours, next week they will be hosting a team that figured in the STAGS’ post-season last year - Either the HURRICANES (who’ll be looking for pay-back after the last-gasp quarter-final STAGS win) or the LIONS (who knocked out the undefeated, defending National Champions STAGS in the Southern Conference Semi-Finals). Should the KILLER BEES take the honours they face a road trip to the victor of above teams.
One team will lose for the first time this season and it will be the all they have to think about over the long off-season. Glory will be only two games away for the team that holds their nerve in this Winner-Takes-All match-up. Who will it be?
Find out for yourself by coming along and supporting the STAGS and KILLER BEES at the Cage
Wide Lane, Southampton SO50 5PE on Sunday 9th March, Kick Off at 2.00pm.

'Perfect' STAGS Back On Top
|
The undefeated Southampton STAGS faced the undefeated Staffordshire STALLIONS in the inaugural BUAFL Championship Game.
The STAGS had won the National Title 2 seasons previously in a year when they had set the points record and greatest final victory in college history, the 07/08 side had an offence just as potent and a defence that conceded only 4 touchdowns all season.
They faced a Staffordshire STALLIONS side led by the rushing attack of #34 Ed Goka, top in rushing yards and touchdowns league-wide.

Total Eclipse Of The Herts (B Tyler)
|
The Southern Conference Final saw the undefeated STAGS host the undefeated HURRICANES in what promised to be the best game in the South this season.
With free-scoring offences and consistently mean but understated defences, there was little to choose between them going into the game.
The winner will go on for a shot at the inaugral BUAFL National Championship Title, in the first BUAFL National Championship Game [College Bowl XXII in old money|Ed] taking on the Northern Conference Champions, Staffordshire STALLIONS.

Stags Give Greenwich A Mean Time
|
The Stags took their 8-0 regular season record & #1 ranking into the playoffs amid doubts that they were yet to be tested against alleged stronger opposition. There were many predictions of a #8 ranked Greenwich victory over the Stags.
Would the tough Greenwich defense prove too much for the record scoring Stags?

A Little Bit Of History
|
The Stags headed into their final game of the regular season knowing it held massive implications for the club. Not only were the Stags competing to go 8-0 for the first time since the early 90’s, they were also within striking distance of the season scoring record in British College Football...

A Home Away From Home
|
The weather for the game was forecasted to be appalling and from the pre-game warm-ups it appeared as though both sides were in for a long, cold wet day. Just before kick-off the skies began to clear and the wind dropped substantially allowing a decent football game to be played on the Tsunami’s very own 3G Field... 45-0 to the STAGS.

Water, Water Everywhere...
|
It was apparent from the opening kick-off that weather was going to play a huge part in this contest. Heavy rain mixed with cold winds made for tricky conditions for both offences.
The Stags... didn’t allow the weather to dampen their spirits... and took the tie... 21-0.
