A Little Bit Of History

The Stags headed into their final game of the regular season knowing it held massive implications for the club. Not only were the Stags competing to go 8-0 for the first time since the early 90’s, they were also within striking distance of the season scoring record in British College Football. They provided the game with the showcase it deserve as they hosted many local business and dignitaries, and had a large crowd, including drums and a Polish supporter in a Stags costume. Commentary for the game was provided by members of the Royal Holloway Vikings.

The crowd gathered were greeted by the most entertaining first 2 minutes possible as #33 Tam Amachree returned the opening kickoff 71 yards for the opening score, Ben Webb added the extra point, 7-0. The defence quickly shut-down the Portsmouth offence and forced a punt. The Stags immediately drove the ball down the field and #1 Michal Katnik connected with #88 Dan Benning to increase the lead to 13-0. The kick-off team then forced and recovered a fumble and left Katnik with a very short field to drive down, which he achieved comfortably capping it with his own rushing touchdown from 2 yards out, 19-0.

A few mistakes left the Stags unable to score again in the first quarter but Tam Amachree scored first again in the second quarter, rushing in from 13 yards out, 25-0. Katnik then added his second touchdown pass of the game, this time to #37 Ben Webb, from 24 yards out, with Webb adding the extra point, 32-0.

After half time, the Stags knew they were in control but had to cut down on the errors that led to penalties. The defence was still containing Portsmouth comfortably, with the DBs in particularly fine form, especially corners #29 Gavin Long and #47 Nicky Cole. The offence began to move the ball better than they had in the first half with Katnik again going in from 2 yards out to increase the score to 39-0 after Webb added the point after. Amachree, again followed Katnik’s touchdown with another rushing touchdown of his own, this time from 4 yards out, 45-0. The defence again forced Portsmouth to punt, and after a high punt was left by everyone as it bounced back towards the Destroyers punter, Amachree scooped up the live ball and ran it in from 33 yards, as the Portsmouth players looked on in shock, 51-0.

In the 4th quarter, #21 Cedric Perret carried on his fine form from this season as he added another touchdown to his tally, with a 4 yard strike, 57-0. Rookie RB #25 Aaron Yamoah got his first ever touchdown shortly after, rushing in from 2 yards. The defence were finally rewarded with their 3rd touchdown of the year, as #91 Graham Cort recovered a fumble in the endzone to finish off the scoring.

Offensive MVP was #88 Dan Benning, with 5 receptions for 95 yards and a touchdown, with some of those grabs being some of the most breathtaking of the season. He held off competition from other WRs #80 Marcin Jankowski (3-75) and #37 Ben Webb (3-85,1 TD), stats which none of them could have achieved without #1 Michal Katnik, (11/21, 248 yards, 2 TDs 3 INTs and 4 carries for 10 yards and 2 TDs). #33 Tam Amachree also broke 800 yards for the 8 games off only 64 carries, with 16 rushing TDs.

Defensive MVP was rookie LB #40 Ed Wilkes with 12 tackles, finishing the regular season as leading tackler with 52, 3 ahead of #4 AJ Woolley who has led the defence all season, despite missing a game through injury. Other defensive players felt that #79 Dave Bustin also deserved a special mention for an outstanding game with 5 tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery from defensive tackle. #92 Ed Butcher also did remarkably well with 8 tackles, 4 of them for a loss and a fumble recovery.

The Stags set a new season scoring mark at 462 whilst their defence only conceded 8 (a touchdown vs Reading, and a 2pt conversion vs Royal Holloway, the offence conceded 2TDs on fumble returns). They would like to thank all their supporters for getting behind the team this season and the Polish crew who have provided a great atmosphere, and commentary. The Stags look forward to hosting the #8 seed, likely old rivals Bristol or Cardiff in 2 weeks time at The Cage.

'Perfect' STAGS Back On Top

The undefeated Southampton STAGS faced the undefeated Staffordshire STALLIONS in the inaugural BUAFL Championship Game.

The STAGS had won the National Title 2 seasons previously in a year when they had set the points record and greatest final victory in college history, the 07/08 side had an offence just as potent and a defence that conceded only 4 touchdowns all season.

They faced a Staffordshire STALLIONS side led by the rushing attack of #34 Ed Goka, top in rushing yards and touchdowns league-wide.
