After I Say I'm Surrey (Sinatra)

Would the STAGS be able to repeat their season opening performance in the return leg of the STAGS-STINGERS 07/08 Series?
Well, yes.
But Surrey have a Sting(er) in the tail (tale? - Arf!)

Surrey received the ball first and were forced to punt immediately, a punt which went out of bounds in their own half. The Stags started with rookie QB #10 Ben Hall under centre and he started well moving the ball down the field well with strong running from his RBs and great blocking from the O-Line, this culminated in the game’s first touchdown, a 13 yard dive from #22 Cedric Perret. On their next possession the Stags took the field with #7 Nic Bee at Quarterback and again the ball was moved swiftly down the field with #33 Tam Amachree cutting back from a sweep up the middle of the field and shrugged off tacklers into the end zone aided by strong downfield blocking by his O-Line. Amachree soon added his second touchdown as the defence forced Surrey 3-and-out again, and Amachree scooped up the short punt and returned it untouched down the right sideline for a 26 yard score. Ben Webb added his first XP of the day to leave the score at 19-0 at the end of quarter.

The Stags started strongly in the second as #5 Kai Passler burst in from 2 yards out, Webb added the XP. Bee, alternating series with Hall, connected on a monster pass to #87 Marcus Sanderson who landed a yard shy of his first ever touchdown, on what may well have been his first ever catch. The QB then stole the glory sneaking in from a yard out. The Stags offence then had a nightmare as a botched exchange coughed the ball up to a Surrey player who ran it in for Surrey’s first points of the season from his own half. The offence now lead the defence in touchdowns conceded for the season, 2 to 1. #22 Chevy Green came out motoring, keen to make up for that offensive lapse, and pounded the ball down the field until he scored from 3 yards out, Webb adding the XP. The half ended in style for Southampton as #11 Dom Olney, following a crushing block from his pulling guard #73 Sam Bennett, was flipped as he leapt in to the end zone on a 7 yard sweep. Webb kicked again, 46-6.

The Stags players were then told to ease off after half time, to cut celebrations down to a minimum and to tone down the hitting. The offence, however, couldn’t help but score when Cedric Perret ripped off a 62 yard rush on the first play of the half right through the heart of the Surrey D. Ben Webb, again was good on the XP attempt. The defence followed the directions laid out to them, and stopped gang tackling, and played in an eerie silence, the still however didn’t concede a point, and gave up minimal yards. #38 Yves Cato had a particularly noticeable impact making back to back plays at the start of the 3rd quarter. The Stags did introduce #1 Michal Katnik on the second half to get some game-time reps, but was often left with 4 rookie wideouts to target, when he eventually struck a touchdown strike it was to #37 Ben Webb, who then added the XP. He then added another hitting #88 Dan Benning, Benning had spent almost the entire previous season on the sidelines injured, but has proved himself this season as being one of the top BUAFL receivers. Michal Katnik then scored an almost comical touchdown, as he rolled out to pass right, saw no options and decided to run it, but found his way blocked, so reversed the field and ran all the way back round to the opposite pylon, with no defenders close to him. Webb added the XP.

In the 4th quarter rookie #36 Jon Fowell rushed for his first ever touchdown from 7 yards out and Nic Bee kept his 100% pass completion rate as he connected with Olney from 9 yards out, Webb added both XPs as the running clock ended the game quickly. 87-6

The highlight of the game for the O-Line had to be being able to rotate 2 complete lines every 2 plays in the second quarter with 7 of them being rookies, 1 in his first ever game, and only 3 returners. The defence also had a good second quarter as a fumble recovered by #92 Ed Butcher was returned to the end zone by #24 Tom ‘Generic’ Smith for what looked like the second time in 2 weeks but the play was called back as Butcher’s hand-off to Smith as he was tackled was ruled to be an illegal forward pass.

Offensive MVP was #22 Cedric Perret, 5 carries for 98 yards. Although considerable rushing contributions were made by Amachree, Passler, Fowell and #25 Aaron Yamoah.

Defensive MVP was #4 AJ Woolley, who has deserved it in every one of the six games he’s played this season as he has consistently lead the tackles, forced numerous fumbles and is possibly the best blitzing linebacker in the league.

'Perfect' STAGS Back On Top

The undefeated Southampton STAGS faced the undefeated Staffordshire STALLIONS in the inaugural BUAFL Championship Game.

The STAGS had won the National Title 2 seasons previously in a year when they had set the points record and greatest final victory in college history, the 07/08 side had an offence just as potent and a defence that conceded only 4 touchdowns all season.

They faced a Staffordshire STALLIONS side led by the rushing attack of #34 Ed Goka, top in rushing yards and touchdowns league-wide.
