| COLLEGE BOWL XX - SOUTHAMPTON 79 - 8 TEESSIDE BAYNHAM'S THE DADDY OF BCAFL AFTER LEADING STAGS TO BOWL ROMP
QUARTERBACK Ted Baynham threw for 336 yards and four touchdowns to lead the STAGS to the British Collegiate League (BCAFL) title with a thumping title-game win over the Cougars
Baynham the Great Britain Bulldogs and former GB Lions youth triggerman, completed 20 of 26 passes and ran for 80 yards on six carries including another two scores as Southampton dominated their Middlesbrough-based opponents.
Southampton marched down the field on their opening drive and scored in impressive style. Within minutes, however, a good punt by Teesside had left the STAGS cornered inside their own five. From there the Cougars defense got their team on the board when they tackled the Southampton ball-carrier in the endzone for a safety. On their next drive Teesside used the momentum to take the lead when QB Pete Rogers connected with his receiver for a great passing touchdown.
With the Cougars leading 8-7, the game was then turned on it's head as Baynham took the game by the scruff of the neck and produced an MVP performance of the highest magnitude. Both through the air and on the ground, Baynham marshalled the Southampton offense to lead his team to a 28-6 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
With the game slipping away, Teesside became increasingly adventurous with the play calls. While this did help make some ground against the STAGS, it could not kick-start a Cougar revival and they could only watch as the half ended in Southampton's favour.
The prayers in the Teesside locker room for a better second half seemed to not be answered as Baynham and the Southampton offense carried on where they left off adding further scores. As the final quarter started the STAGS were in such a strong position that backup quarterback Luke de Costa was able to get a little game time. He responded to complete the Cougars misery by completing all three passes thrown including one for a touchdown.
