STAGS VICTORIOUS IN RECORD COLLEGE BOWL XX VICTORY
|

| The SOUTHAMPTON STAGS American Football team beat Champions of the North UT Cougars by 79 points to 8, to win College Bowl XX at the Butts Park Arena, Coventry last Sunday.
Both teams fired out of the blocks with the STAGS scoring on the opening drive of the game. A few careless penalties from Southampton meant that they started their second drive with their backs to the wall. The Cougar's defense put a lot of pressure up the middle, causing the safety and Teesside's first score of the day. The 'home' team then drove the ball down the field and threw a touchdown pass in the corner for what would prove to be their final points of the day.
The STAGS offense continued their form throughout the first quarter with a successful blend of pass and run to keep the chains moving. After a few drives the Southampton defense were getting into gear, managing to limit UT's passing game and restrict the run, forcing several turnovers on downs and giving excellent field position to their offense.
At half time the score was 46-8 to the STAGS but they knew that they could not get complacent as the Cougar's QB Pete Rogers was always a threat with the deep pass.
The rain came at the start of the third quarter and a change of formation by UT's offense showed their intention to pass their way back into the game. On the Cougar's first drive STAGS' linebacker, Justin Sysum picked off an out pattern and returned it for a touchdown.
At the beginning of the fourth quarter Southampton began to field their back-up players while remaining punishing on offense and defense, not conceding a single sack all game and scoring on almost every drive.
An impressive 11 players from the STAGS' squad have been selected for the England(?) team including STAGS' quarterback Ted Baynham who broke the league record for touchdowns and pass completions.
STAGS' Head Coach, Graham Thorpe, said: "This was a great result. "It has taken four years to get the team to this level and it is good to get a reward. by Richard Hogg |
