PASSING FANCY
|

| COLLEGE BOWL XX - Southampton STAGS vs University of Teeside COUGARS - Coventry Rugby Club, The Butts Arena, Coventry - March 26 - Kick Off 1pm QB ROGERS AND BAYNHAM AIM TO LIGHT UP COLLEGE BOWL SKIES This Season's College Bowl marks the landmark 20th running on this event. A highlight of this clash is that it sees possibly the two hottest young quarterbacks anywhere in British football go head to head.
Teeside's Pete Rogers has established probably the league's most exciting passing combination with his star receiver Cheyne McDonald. Together they have given the Cougars the most feared passing attack in the league.
For the STAGS, GB Bulldog QB Ted Baynham stands alone in consistently being the best in his position for the last three years. In an offense featuring many weapons Baynham has orchestrated an average over 52 points a game in the regular season for the STAGS.
With strong, hard hitting, no nonsense defenses, and top level coaches on both sidelines, this game is being anticipated as one of the most even and potent match ups in British Collegiate football history.
FACTS AND FIGURES - The College Bowl has seen 17 different teams compete for the title over it's 20-year history with 10 different teams winning the crown. Only once has the game been tied. - Both Southampton & Teeside have previously been in two College Bowls but neither team has been in the season finale for over 12 years. - Both Teams are unbeaten in College Bowl matches. - Southampton were at the College Bowl most recently of the two teams in this year's match (College Bowl VII - 1993) - Teeside were at the College Bowl 15 years ago in College Bowl V - 1991 - Southampton have never conceded a point in 120 minutes of College Bowl football. - Neither of last year's finalists (Glasgow Tigers & Birmingham Lions) made it as far as the semi-finals this year, an indication of how strong this year's competition has been.
BCAFL PLAYOFFS - SOUTHAMPTON 19 - 6 CARDIFF
The STAGS charged into the College Bowl as Quarterback Ted Baynham threw two touchdown passes against the Cobras. After strong defense from both sides a Southampton error off a punt snap deep in their own half allowed a Cardiff player to dive on to the ball in the endzone to open the scoring.
While the Cobras fought hard, making life difficult for Baynham and the STAGS Offense, Southampton began to get the cogs of their offensive machine to move. Baynham ominously beegan to complete passes to his favourite receivers Tom Fordham and Dominic Olney, the latter scoring on a 17-yard completion to cancel out Cardiff's Lead.
As the game neared the half, Southampton grew in confidence. After a sustained drive they doubled their advantage when Tam Amachree crashed in from two yards out to put the STAGS 12-6 up.
The second half saw a close game get even tighter as Cardiff tried to stage a comeback, however, the STAGS defense continued to hold firm and Baynham dealt the Cobras the killer blow when he hit Sam Bennett from nine yards out for a TD.
A scoreless final period saw both teams tire as the previous week's games caught up with them. Cardiff did threaten at one point, forcing a goal-line stand, but Cardiff's star running back Lance Godfrey couldn't get into the endzone and the STAGS used the legs of Amachree, who ran for 111 yards, to run out the clock.
