DOUBLE SUCCESS FOR THE STAGS

DOUBLE SUCCESS FOR THE STAGS

IT WAS a clear case of killing two birds with one stone. A Southampton-based American Football team kept their dreams of glory alive and raised money for charity at the same time.

Southampton STAGS - wearing yellow helmets and made up of students from Southampton University and Institute - trounced the Oxford Cavaliers - from Oxford University and in blue helmets - 27-6 to stay in the hunt for the end-of-season play-offs.

They also raised £400 for the Lisa Wilson Scholarship Fund, which gives financial grants to students at the Institute in memory of a former Southampton Institute business student, who died in a car crash in the Australian Outback shortly after graduating.

STAGS player Gus McKechnie said: "It is a great win for us.
"Now we have got to focus on winning the next two games to make sure we get into the play-offs.
"It is nice that we could raise some money for such a good cause as well."

The game, at Wellington Sports Ground, Eastleigh, kicked off after former Saints player Mark Dennis tossed the coin.
