STAGS BATTLE TO FINAL
STAGS BATTLE TO FINALFor the second time this season the Southampton Stags and Southern Sundevils have enjoyed great media exposure. The teams who were featured on national and local television due to Children in Need were featured on television on the 27th of February.

The new article featured game footage from the Stags versus Hurricanes game earlier in the season. It also featured game footage from the 1998 senior Sundevils Div2 championship. Speakers from the clubs included Coach Hogan and ‘QT’ Yelen from the Stags. Coach of the Year Graham Thorpe’s assistant Scott Miller spoke of the success of the double winning Sundevils youth side.

This is on the back of the Stags appearance in the BCAFL playoffs for the third year running. However this is down to the hard work the side has put into improving its form. A cold winter’s loss to Kent meant the Stags were put in the position of having to win all three games post Christmas to stay in the playoff chase. A strong effort by the team all round ensured the road into the playoffs was cleared.

First up were the previously unbeaten Herts Hurricanes who had virtually steam rollered all previous teams in their path. A shoot out between Southampton and Herts meant that any supporters were kept on the edge all game. In the end the team came out 33-31 winners thanks to some great running by backs Dauley and Miller who came up big on the day.

It was then down to a long tiring trip to Plymouth and under difficult conditions the Stags won 26-6. This was due in part to some great 2nd quarter play plus touchdowns from Paul Brady and Deniz Karigule. The defence also played their part yet again limiting the Blitz to only a touchdown.

Then came the big one, against a team who had previously beaten Southampton in an earlier encounter. Bristol had come to Southampton needing to keep their own playoff hopes alive. The game started with Bristol driving and scoring on their first possesion. Southampton although stalling on the first possession came back with a touchdown from Scott Miller. Later in the half saw the play that truly swung the game in the Stags favour. A fumble by Bristol was scooped up by Nick Morrison Smith who proceeded to follow his blockers for a seventy-yard touchdown. In the fourth quarter Ted Baynham found Paul Brady on a thirty seven yard touchdown pass, sealing Southampton’s win.

The Stags also donated £400 pounds to the Meningitis research foundation, which was raised, from the Stags Superbowl party in January and their charity work with For Your Eyes Only.

In the quarter-finals of the shield, the Stags overcame a strong Cardiff side with relative ease by30 point to 24 to secure a place in the Southern Regional finals. A place in the national finals is up for grabs for the winner.
